Do not choose by appearance alone. French é, Polish ę, Lithuanian ė, and Czech ě represent different spelling systems and are not interchangeable versions of a decorative E.

The Windows Alt values require a numeric keypad and Num Lock. Word Unicode means typing the hexadecimal value and pressing Alt+X.

Type E with an accent on Windows

For é, hold Alt, type 0233 on the numeric keypad, and release Alt. The corresponding common codes are 0232 for è, 0234 for ê, and 0235 for ë. Uppercase codes appear in the table.

If the laptop has no numeric keypad, copy the letter, use Character Map, or add United States-International. Avoid treating decimal Unicode values as universal Alt codes; extended forms such as ę and ě are better entered with Word Alt+X or a language keyboard.

United States-International patterns

Add the layout under Settings → Time & language → Language & region, then switch with Windows+Spacebar.

• Apostrophe then E makes é.
• Grave key then E makes è.
• Shift+6 then E makes ê.
• Quotation-mark key then E makes ë.

Type accented E on Mac

The common US Mac sequences are:

• Option+E, release, then E for é.
• Option+`, release, then E for è.
• Option+I, release, then E for ê.
• Option+U, release, then E for ë.

Hold Shift with the final E for uppercase. You can also press and hold E until the accent menu appears, then select the letter by number.

Microsoft Word and Outlook

Word uses Ctrl combinations for the common four:

• Ctrl+’, release, then E for é.
• Ctrl+`, release, then E for è.
• Ctrl+Shift+^, release, then E for ê.
• Ctrl+Shift+:, release, then E for ë.

For every form in the first table, use Unicode Alt+X. Type 0119 followed by Alt+X for ę, 011B for ě, or 0113 for ē. Uppercase uses the neighboring value shown above.

Excel, PowerPoint, and Google Docs

Excel and PowerPoint accept the operating-system keyboard shortcuts. Their Insert → Symbol windows are useful for less common characters, especially when the current font must be checked for support.

In Google Docs, choose Insert → Special characters and search for the formal Unicode name. “E with ogonek” finds ę; “E with caron” finds ě. Drawing the tiny mark is slower and more error-prone than searching by name.

Google Sheets uses the system keyboard or pasted Unicode text. A copied é remains the same code point even if a spreadsheet font draws it differently.

Chromebook, iPhone, and Android

On Chromebook, hold E where the accent menu is supported, or add US International or the language keyboard. Google’s Chromebook accent instructions show the current international-key combinations.

On iPhone, iPad, and Android, touch and hold E and slide to the required form. The menu usually includes é, è, ê, ë, ē, ė, and ę, but availability depends on the active language.

If ě or another form is missing, add Czech, Polish, Lithuanian, or the language you are actually writing. That also gives the phone better autocorrect for the surrounding word.

What each accented E does

In French, the marks are not optional styling. Été (“summer”), père (“father”), être (“to be”), and Noël each use an E mark for a different spelling or pronunciation reason.

Spanish uses é to mark stress when the normal stress rule would not place it correctly, or to distinguish forms in certain contexts. It does not normally use è, ê, or ë; our guide to Spanish slang for friend shows everyday vocabulary in context.

Polish ę is a separate nasal vowel letter; Czech ě signals a pronunciation change involving the preceding consonant; Lithuanian ė is its own vowel. Replacing these with plain e can create a misspelling, not merely a missing flourish.

Troubleshooting

An apostrophe appears before E

Confirm that United States-International is active. On the correct layout, press apostrophe once, release it, and then type E. Pressing Spacebar completes the apostrophe itself instead.

Alt+0233 does nothing

Use the numeric keypad, turn on Num Lock, keep Alt held, and include the leading zero. Use Character Map or a language layout on a keypad-free laptop.

Word leaves 0119 as text

Place the cursor directly after the code and press Alt+X. If other hexadecimal characters touch the code, select only 0119 before converting it.

The letter becomes a box

The destination font lacks that glyph. This is more likely with extended forms than with é or è. Switch to a broader Unicode font.
